We are thrilled to congratulate Marked, one of our cohort companies, on their recent successes. Marked was recently awarded a £45,000 Transport Research and Innovation Grant by the UK Department for Transport, a milestone achievement that highlights their impactful work on urban cycling safety. This recognition was also featured in The Scotsman, celebrating Marked’s achievements in safer commuting for cyclists.
With the rise in urban cycling, safety remains a primary concern. Many cyclists, especially those less confident, struggle to find safe, low-traffic routes through bustling city streets. Marked recognised this need and developed a technology solution that does more than just navigate—it prioritises safety, helping cyclists feel more secure on their journeys. This technology enables cyclists to identify the safest paths, empowering more people to choose sustainable transportation options.
Marked’s innovation doesn’t only improve individual safety; it aligns closely with broader urban sustainability goals. As a Glasgow City Council spokesperson shared, “We welcome any innovation that provides easily accessible information in support of a shift to more sustainable transport choices.” By offering a solution that encourages cycling as a viable commuting option, Marked supports efforts to reduce city traffic and greenhouse gas emissions.
This support from the UK Department for Transport signals national interest in Marked’s contribution to a greener transport network. UK Transport Minister Mike Kane stated, “Innovation is the driving force behind our transport system, and these winning projects are leading the charge by creating cutting-edge solutions that could offer so much benefit for all.” Marked’s innovative technology stands as a prime example of how design and innovation can meet crucial community needs and fuel impactful change.
We extend our congratulations to Mark Smith and Garance Locatelli for their dedication and impact on the future of urban cycling. Marked’s vision has not only earned them national recognition but has also positioned them as leaders in sustainable transport.
